About Gastric Balloon Surgery
The gastric balloon is an effective day case weight loss procedure to help you lose 30% of your excess weight.
This may be to prepare you for treatment for other conditions, or kick start your new weight loss journey. The balloon is placed under endoscopic guidance and stays in place for 6 to 12 months.
The Gastric Balloon Procedure
Under a general anaesthetic the optimise surgeon performs an endoscopy to visualise the inside of the stomach. The balloon is then placed and inflated with approximately 600ml of liquid using a specialised delivery device.
Once detached the balloon sits within the upper part of the stomach, stimulating early fullness and assisting with weight loss. The balloon is then removed as a short, simple day case procedure 6 to 12 months later.
How to Prepare for Gastric Balloon Surgery

During Your Stay
High level care and support, before, during and after your procedure. We aim to optimise your weight loss journey by performing surgery within a tailored specialist weight loss plan. All of our team are NHS Weight loss specialists, bringing their safe expertise to the private sector.
On the day of your procedure, you will be admitted to your own private room. When it is your turn, our friendly team will take you into the operating theatre. Our specialist Bariatric Anaesthetist will give you a safe general anaesthetic, using the latest enhanced recovery protocols in order to speed up your recovery. The procedure lasts for around 20 minutes. We would expect you to go home later that day after being reviewed by one of the Optimise specialist team.
